The White-ification of the Asian Woman
It seems that conventional western standards of beauty have reached us Asian women. Not only is it impossible for women of Caucasian descent to achieve the poreless, airbrushed look of a super model on the cover of vogue, it’s even more impossible for Asian women to achieve that look.
Now, I’ve been told by my family repeatedly at how lucky I am to have skin that is lighter than other Asian girls. But I’ve also been told repeatedly at how ugly and fat I am, but that’s the story for another day. Today, it’s the fact that prejudice against skin colours in the Asian community seems to primarily come from within the community itself.
Rather than have our own race, and people of our own cultures feel pride in our tan skins and our round faces and whatever other characteristic there is that makes us Asian, we feel ashamed because were not white. And we gossip about all the other people in our community who are darker skinned than us, calling them kalaas, and we mock them, and call them ugly.
For what? To achieve a western ideal of beauty? To perpetuate outdated ideals that the paler skinned you are, the richer/wealthier/nobler/higher status you are? And it’s our parents, the older generation who continue to instill this idea in us. Sure it’s easier to agree with them, to stop an argument, and just ignore their ignorance.
But that’s not good enough. When women in our community are feeling like shit because we ignore pointless prejudice over no good reason of our own neighbours and friends, then we’re just as bad as the ones perpetuating the same stereotypes.
Ignorance isn’t good enough any more. I see loads of Asian girls and women buying into the whole body positivism thing, but yet, they do nothing about the body shaming within our own community, done by our own friends and our own family.
The White-ification of the Asian woman is not only logically impossible, but morally wrong. And I don’t mean when Asian women adopt some western ideals into their way of thinking, I mean literal white-ification.
The amount of women (and men) who I know have used toxic creams and chemicals, hazardous to their skin, hazardous to their health, just to be a shade lighter, just to be a little whiter. For what?
For those in our own community who shame them for the way they look. Are they worth harming yourself? Are they worth letting the ones you love harm themselves?
